What inspired The Perry’s name?

The Perry Hotel gets its name from Commodore Matthew Perry, the father of the US Navy. In March 1822, then-Lt. Perry sailed the USS Shark to Key West and planted the American flag, officially claiming the Florida Keys as a U.S. possession. The military presence Perry established evolved into Naval Air Station Key West (still there today!). But the story gets better: The base became critical for fighting piracy in the Caribbean and enforcing the end of the slave trade.

Though more famous for opening Japan to the West in 1854, Perry’s was instrumental in the development of Key West. Raise a glass to him next time you’re hanging out at Salty Oyster – we’ll cheers with ya!
